MASTER OF DAYS, KONSTANTIN CHAYKIN’S MECHANICAL CUFFLINKS

Konstantin Chaykin continues to explore the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking, this time beyond the wrist. His latest creation, Master of Days, is a pair of cufflinks capable of displaying the day of the week through a mechanism activated every time they are fastened.

The idea starts with one of watchmaking’s most traditional complications, the calendar, but completely changes the way it works. Instead of receiving energy from a movement, the mechanism is activated by the wearer. Each time the cufflink is fastened to a shirt cuff, the hand automatically advances to the next day.

Each piece measures just 18 mm in diameter and is crafted from titanium. Beneath an antireflective sapphire crystal, the mechanism remains fully visible, with a seven-pointed star wheel controlling the movement of the distinctive blue hand.

And behind those small dimensions lies considerably more engineering than you might expect. Each cufflink is made up of 40 components, bringing the total to 80 for the pair. The surfaces combine brushed and polished finishes, while the edges feature hand-finished anglage.

Master of Days shows just how far a watchmaking complication can go when presented in a different format. An unconventional creation that fits perfectly within Konstantin Chaykin’s distinctive creative universe.
