The Story of Frederique Constant

Swiss watchmaking is home to countless companies with histories stretching back more than a century. Many were built by families whose names have been tied to the craft for generations. Frederique Constant followed a very different path.

The brand was founded in 1988 by Peter and Aletta Stas, a Dutch couple with no background in the watch industry. Peter had built his career in marketing, while Aletta shared his entrepreneurial spirit. Together, they pursued an ambitious idea: to create high-quality Swiss Made mechanical watches at a price that was more accessible than many of the traditional manufacturers.

The company’s first collection was introduced in 1992. Two years later, the Heart Beat became one of Frederique Constant’s defining creations. Its opening on the dial, revealing part of the movement, quickly became one of the brand’s most recognizable design signatures and helped establish its identity within the Swiss watch industry.

Over the following years, Frederique Constant continued to grow by developing its own Manufacture calibers, opening its headquarters and manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, and expanding into markets around the world. In 2016, the company joined Citizen Group, a move that supported its international growth while preserving the philosophy that Peter and Aletta had established from the very beginning.
